CAIP® Recertification Requirements

The CAIP certification is valid for three years, provided the certificant pays the required certification fee and submits the appropriate continuing education documentation.

The Board of Ambulatory Surgery Certification (BASC) has updated the processes for paying CAIP certification fees and submitting infection prevention contact hours (IPCHs). These changes are intended to make both processes easier to understand and simpler to complete.

Certification Fees

Certification fees are paid once every three years, rather than annually, beginning with each new three-year certification cycle.

Certificants who are already in the middle of a three-year cycle will continue paying annually until their next three-year certification period begins. After that, fees will be due once every three years.

Payments will continue to be made through the CAIP online recertification system between October 1 and December 31 in the applicable year.

Continuing Education

Certificants are no longer required to submit six hours in each of the five content areas during a three-year recertification cycle. Instead, certificants must submit 30 total IPCHs during each three-year recertification cycle, along with the required information and documentation, through the CAIP online recertification system by December 31 of the third year of the cycle.

Infection control education may be obtained from any provider if the educational program type is listed below.

  • In-person program
  • Virtual learning, live or on demand
  • Formal oral presentation led by the certificant

Under this updated process, certificants must provide the required information and supporting documentation when submitting continuing education. Additional details are provided in the attachment below.

Continuing education that has already been submitted will remain listed in the CAIP online recertification system. When new entries are added, the total number of hours will increase; however, content areas will no longer appear.

Failure to meet the continuing education and/or certification fee requirements will result in revocation of the credential. No extension period will be granted.

“It has been necessary for some time to develop a certification that recognizes the knowledge base of ASC infection preventionists. The CAIP certification allows ASC infection preventionists to validate their comprehensive knowledge. Certification distinguishes the infection preventionist as a leader devoted to ambulatory surgery infection prevention standards and best practices and is a symbol of dedication to personal development.”
