When you first heard about the CAIP credential, what were your initial thoughts?

When I first heard about the CAIP credential I was extremely excited that a need for the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) community was being met. ASCs are required to have a designated Infection Preventionist, but prior to the CAIP credential there wasn’t a clear path for ASC Infection Preventionists to follow. The CAIP credential gives an ASC-specific focus that is recognized in the industry.

Why did you pursue the CAIP credential?

I pursued the CAIP credential because Infection Control (IC) in the ASC is vitally important. Having a credential that is specific to the ASC helps identify IC issues that are relevant and important to the ASC community.

What do you think is the value of CAIP?

The value of the CAIP is showing others that I am committed and serious about my commitment to Infection Control in the ASC. Surveyors see the CAIP credential and recognize that I have a specific commitment to Infection Prevention in my ASC.

How do you think earning and maintaining the credential will benefit you and your ASC?

Earning and maintaining this credential shows my commitment to understanding and continuously learning about Infection Control needs in the ASC. Going through the process of obtaining the credential gave me the ability to focus deeper on ASC-specific Infection Control issues. Having requirements to maintain the CAIP credential allows me to dedicate specific Continuing Education on Infection Control needs that are relevant to my practice in the ASC.

What advice would you give to those individuals who are considering pursuing CAIP?

Do it! Taking on a credential is a daunting task. We never feel as though we have enough time in the day. Make time to make this a priority. If you are an Infection Preventionist in an ASC you are already learning and putting the work in. Get credit for all of the hard work you do every day!
